Are you an Underpant Gnome?

We are the Foolish Couple, Andy and Minna. We believe that healthy relationships start with health and our goal is to help people achieve true health and healthy relationships through nutrition, exercises, mindset and lifestyle.

Today we have invited our resident teddy bear to this blog because, well, as you can see, he is wearing underpants. And today, we’re going to talk about, yeah, underpants.

The other day someone told us about this episode on South Park that he insisted that we should watch. Normally we don’t watch South Park, but we decided to check out this particular episode, which is called “underpants gnomes”.

So, the story goes like this. The character in South Park was talking to his friends, and he said,

‘Someone has been stealing my underpants! I only have 1 pair left!’

So, they set off to look for the underpants thief, and they found out that it was a bunch of gnomes that has been stealing his underpants.

They followed these gnomes back to their headquarters, and there, they see piles and piles of underpants. They grabbed a gnome, and asked,

‘What are you doing with all these underpants?’

The gnome said, ‘Well, I don’t really know. We are just told to collect underpants.’

Next they went and grabbed the boss gnome, the CEO gnome, and the CEO brings out this big presentation that says “This is our business plan.”

Step 1: collect underpants

Step 2: step 2 is a giant red question mark

Step 3: PROFITS!

And the all the gnomes cheered when they hear profits!

We know this is a silly story, it is South Park after all. But we’re talking about this because we noticed that there are a lot of you that are doing pretty much the same thing that all the Gnomes are doing.

You may not be collecting underpants, but you are collecting information and data. As health coaches, we often hear people say something like

‘Yeah I’ve read this journal that doing this can have this benefit on your health’

‘I’ve read on Flipboard that you should not be eating so much processed carbs because it does this to your body!’

These people are just collecting underpants, they know that they want the profits. In this case the profits are to have a healthy and strong body, but they are missing out on Step 2.

Step 2, of course, is to take action. You cannot have any kind of success without taking action.

If you have the information, if you know that you should be exercising, that you should be eating organic, that you should stop eating processed carbohydrates such as white rice, noodles, pasta, breads, cakes and pies; but you don’t do any of these things. You will never get to step 3 which is the profits.

And that’s the story of most people. So how can you make sure that you are not one of those people missing out on the profits? That you are the exception, that you are the 1% that takes action so that you can get the profits. How do you become successful to be healthy and have a strong body? How can you insure that you will change your lifestyle to exercise and eat well?

Here's 3 things that you need:

First, Coach not Couch.

Most people watch sports, but they don’t play sports.

They watch reality shows on people finding love, but they don’t go out and find their own love.

They sit and watch other people take action and get to their success while they sit on their couch and do nothing.

To get your off the couch, you need a coach. You need someone who will kick your butt and get you off the couch. A health coach would not only tell you want you need to do, but also make sure that you actually do those things that would get you healthy.

Second, you need an accountability partner. It is best if your husband or wife would be your accountability partner. Your spouse tends to be the person that is the most honest to you, and they also have your best interest in mind. So, when you go on a water fast, they would make sure that you don’t sneak a snack. They are the ones that will go for that walk with you, make sure you get your daily 30 minutes of exercise. Your partner is the one that would help you eat clean and well.

The third thing, and that’s just human nature, is competition. When you sign up for a challenge or a competition, you are that much more motivated to reach your goal and make the change. Everyone wants to WIN. Nobody wants to be a loser. So, adding a little competition to your life will help you achieve your goals faster.

And if your step 3, your goal, is to get a healthy, strong body, but you just need some help with Step 1 and 2. We have something for you.
